Scanners produce TIFF, and almost nothing else reads it

TIFF is the archival format of the scanning and printing world. It is usually uncompressed or losslessly compressed, it can hold multiple pages in one file, and it preserves colour information that matters for print. It is also enormous and almost nothing outside professional software will open it.

Converting to JPG makes the scan usable: email it, upload it, put it in a document, open it on a phone. A page that ran to forty megabytes as a TIFF is commonly one or two as a JPG, with no difference you would notice on screen.

One limitation to state plainly. TIFF decoding is done by your browser, and only Safari can do it. In Chrome, Firefox or Edge the file will not open at all, and this page will tell you rather than fail quietly. On a Mac, an iPhone or an iPad using Safari it works.

TIFF, what you have

The archival format of scanning and printing. Usually lossless, often uncompressed, able to hold several pages in one file and consequently very large.

Where it works: Professional imaging and print software, plus Safari. Chrome, Firefox and most upload forms cannot read it.

JPG, what you get

The oldest and most widely supported image format there is. It throws away detail your eye is unlikely to notice, which is why photographs end up several times smaller than they would otherwise be.

Where it works: Everything. Every browser, every operating system, every printer, every upload form and every television made in the last thirty years.

TIFF stores every pixel exactly and JPG does not, so this conversion is the first time the image has been compressed lossily. That is why the saving is usually large and the visible difference usually small.

TIFF can hold a transparent background and JPG cannot, so any transparency is filled with white before encoding. That is deliberate: filling with black, as some converters do, is how a logo ends up on a dark rectangle.

Age matters more than it looks. A format introduced in the 1990s is read by everything ever made, and one introduced in the last ten years is read by browsers and very little else. That single fact explains most of the reasons people convert images at all.

What happens to the file size

Expect a large reduction. TIFF stores the image without lossy compression and JPG does not, so cuts of eighty to ninety five percent are ordinary. This is the conversion where the numbers are most dramatic.

Two things drive the number more than the format does. The first is the content: a photograph of a landscape holds far more unique detail than a screenshot of a spreadsheet, and detail is what costs bytes. The second is the pixel dimensions, which no format conversion changes. A twelve megapixel photograph is twelve megapixels whatever container it sits in.

If you need to hit a specific size rather than simply make the file smaller, converting is the wrong tool. Our image compressor takes a target in kilobytes and finds the highest quality that fits under it, which is what upload forms with a stated limit actually require.

Keep the TIFF, share the JPG

TIFF exists for a reason and converting is not a replacement for it.

  • Archival scans of documents, keep the TIFF as the master. It is lossless and will still be readable in decades.
  • Sending a scan to someone, send the JPG. It is a fraction of the size and opens on their phone.
  • Uploading to a portal, JPG. Almost no upload form accepts TIFF.
  • Sending to a commercial printer, keep the TIFF. That is exactly the workflow it was designed for.

Multi page TIFF files convert their first page only, since a JPG holds a single image.

Why this needs Safari

Every conversion on this site runs inside your browser rather than on a server, which is what makes it private and instant. It also means the page can only open the formats your browser itself can decode, and TIFF is one that most browsers cannot.

Safari decodes TIFF because Apple builds the decoder into the operating system and Safari uses it. Chrome, Firefox and Edge ship their own image pipelines and none of them include TIFF, largely for patent licensing reasons. That is why the same file opens on a Mac and refuses to open on Windows.

So on an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac using Safari, this page works normally. Elsewhere the file will not load, and the page says so plainly rather than showing you a broken thumbnail and leaving you to guess. The alternative would be to upload your files to a server for conversion, which is exactly what we are not willing to do.

Your filename is kept

The converted file keeps the name you gave it, with only the extension changed. Nothing is appended, no brand is inserted and no counter is added. These files get uploaded straight into forms that sometimes check the name, and an unexpected one is one more thing that can be rejected for no good reason.

There is no watermark either, at any size, on any number of files. A watermark on a free converter exists to sell you the paid version, and we would rather not have that conversation with you at all.

Converting several files at once

Images are already compressed, so the zip stores them rather than compressing them again, which would only make the file larger.

If a file cannot be read, that row says so and the rest carry on. One awkward file in a folder of fifty does not stop the other forty nine.

What happens to the metadata

The conversion decodes the picture and encodes it again, so the embedded metadata does not travel with it. That includes EXIF data: the camera model, the exposure settings, the date, and on a phone photograph the GPS coordinates of wherever it was taken.

For most people that is a benefit rather than a loss. A photograph taken at home and uploaded to a public listing carries the location of your home inside it unless something strips it, and very few sites do. Converting the file removes it as a side effect.

If you actually want the metadata kept, for a photography portfolio or a copyright claim, this is the wrong tool and you should keep the original alongside the converted copy. Colour profiles are handled the same way: the image is converted into the standard sRGB space that browsers and the web use, which is right for anything published online and wrong for a print workflow that depends on a wider profile.
